Best-Ever Breakfast

Cookies.jpgEating a smart breakfast leads to healthier choices throughout the day. Breakfast can improve concentration and mood and research shows that breakfast eaters have a higher intake of essential vitamins. If one of the barriers below stands in your way of ‘breaking the fast,’ check out our fixes to overcome them.

Breakfast Barrier #1: I don’t have enough time.

The fix: Stock your fridge and pantry with portable, grab-and-go breakfast options.

Preparing mini muffin frittatas, overnight oatmeal and our Cran-Orange Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies in advance saves time too. Cranberries are a kitchen staple for a quick fix anytime. As America’s Original Superfruit® they offer big health benefits in a little package, providing unique polyphenols not commonly found in other fruits. Blend cranberry juice into your breakfast smoothie or mix up your morning parfait by stirring in cranberry sauce or dried cranberries for a fruity and tart flavor blast.

What’s more portable than yogurt? Müller® Corner® Yogurt is packed in a unique two-chamber cup with creamy Greek-style low-fat yogurt on one side and add-ins like blackberries, raspberries, strawberries or caramelized almonds on the other side. It supplies an excellent source of protein and calcium, is gluten free and contains no high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners or flavors. Look for their new Dessert Inspired Yogurts too!

Breakfast Barrier #2: I’m trying to lose weight.

The fix: Research shows that individuals trying to manage their weight are more successful when they eat breakfast regularly.

Include at least 25 grams of protein at breakfast to promote appetite satisfaction and weight control. Eggs, Greek yogurt, low-fat dairy foods and nuts are all sensible options. One extra-large Eggland’s® Best Egg contains seven grams of high-quality protein and 13 essential vitamins and minerals for only 70 calories. They also contain four times more vitamin D and over double the omega 3’s of ordinary eggs. The secret behind these farm-fresh eggs is the wholesome, all-vegetarian diet the hens are fed. They are also produced locally throughout the United States and are typically delivered to our stores within just 72 hours of laying.

Save calories at breakfast by using zero-calorie Truvia® Natural Sweetener instead of sugar in hot beverages, cereal or smoothies. It’s made from the sweetest part of the stevia leaf and has a sweetness level 200 times that of sugar. When baking breakfast treats and more, try spoonable Truvia® Baking Blend and Brown Sugar Blend.

Breakfast Barrier #3: I’m not hungry in the morning.

The fix: Breakfast is your body’s fuel for the day ahead. Start with something light and plan a mid-morning snack to keep your energy up until lunchtime.

Ease yourself into the habit of eating breakfast by incorporating small portions of nutrient-rich foods into your morning routine. Try a cup of fresh fruit and low-fat yogurt or make a homemade trail mix with dried fruit, nuts and wholegrain Original Cheerios®. Many of the classic flavors of this breakfast favorite are now gluten free including Original, Honey Nut, Multi Grain, Apple Cinnamon and Frosted. By simply removing stray wheat, rye and barley grains from their oat supply, these cereals are free of gluten, yet have the same great taste you have grown to love. All gluten-free varieties can easily be identified by a gluten-free seal on the box.

If you crave savory breakfast foods like scrambled eggs or an omelet, cook them in Carrington Farms® Sriracha Flavor Coconut Liquid Cooking Oil for a hint of spicy heat. And for pancakes, quick breads or breakfast cookies, try their Coconut Liquid Cooking Oil. Extracted from fresh mature coconuts, coconut oil contains no hydrogenated oils or trans fats. While it’s a source of saturated fat, it’s also high in lauric acid, a type of fat that emerging, but not conclusive, research suggests may raise or have a neutral effect on HDL ‘good’ cholesterol levels. Use coconut oil in moderation to keep your total daily saturated fat intake sensible.

Breakfast Barrier #4: Breakfast foods aren’t my thing.

The fix: If you don’t like traditional ‘breakfast foods,’ don’t eat them! It’s more about jump-starting your metabolism, boosting energy and sneaking in healthy nutrients than the types of foods that are eaten.

Jazz up whole-grain toast with creative toppers like peanut butter, sliced banana and honey; mashed ripe avocado, a hard-boiled egg and hot sauce or Earth Balance® All Natural Organic Whipped Buttery Spread, sliced pears, chopped walnuts and gorgonzola cheese crumbles. All Earth Balance® Spreads are vegan, made with expeller-pressed oils and contain no artificial ingredients or trans-fat containing hydrogenated oils.
